Woodpeckers Wreck Walls While Whacking Out Wilderness Wedge

Tips on how to avoid damage made by Woodpeckers

ATLANTA – (March 1, 2003) Sto Corp, the innovative world leader in cladding, coating and restoration systems, has released information referencing potential problems that woodpeckers can create for insulated wall claddings when looking for new nesting areas.

Woodpecker problems occur mainly in spring when they are looking for nesting sites. This usually occurs in areas where trees have been removed (typically old dead trees) that they hollow out for nests. To a woodpecker, Exterior Insulating Finish Systems (EIFS) and wood-siding sounds like an old dead tree. They dig in, find EPS, decide they don't like it and move 6" to the left or right. This is usually occurs under the eaves. What should you consider?

· Short term solution: Hang fish line or fine netting over the area. The birds bump into it and move off.
· Long term solution: Put up woodpecker nesting boxes. You can get them from Wild Birds Unlimited or other similar bird supply stores. Woodpeckers are territorial so the pest becomes your ally in keeping other birds away.
· Not a solution: Hot pepper spray or nasty tasting solutions - they can't taste it.
Not a solution: Plastic owls: Believe it or not, woodpeckers can tell the difference.
