| STO CORP INTRODUCES LOTUSAN™ - THE EXTERIOR COATING WITH THE LOTUS-EFFECT® A feature discovered on the lotus plant and applied in the Lotusan exterior coating
ATLANTA – (June 13, 2005) Sto Corp, the innovative world leader in cladding, coating and restoration systems, has introduced Lotusan™, an exterior coating with a pronounced self-cleaning effect, into the North American market.
Lotusan is an exterior wall coating modeled on the microstructure of the lotus leaf. This BIONICS™ technology, engineered by Sto, imparts super-hydrophobic properties – the Lotus-Effect® - to the coating.
The features of Lotusan include:
· Highly resistant to soiling, pronounced self cleaning effect
· Highly resistant to mold, mildew, and algae
· Excellent weather and chalk resistance
· High water vapor permeability
“It has a very high level of water- and dirt-repellence,” said Bryce Brandon, Sto market manager. “Lotusan not only resists the growth of mold, mildew, and algae, it also has excellent weather and UV fade resistance.”
Lotusan is ideal for new construction and recoat projects over concrete, stucco, EIFS, and fiber cement board substrates and incorporates high water vapor permeability. It has a smooth matte (flat) surface and is available in 38 standard colors (Sto Corp.’s classic color collection) plus custom color matching (some limitations apply).
The Lotus effect is actually a natural phenomenon discovered on the Asian lotus plant. After each rainfall this plant's leaves are immaculately clean and dry, as they are not wettable with water; dirt runs off with the raindrops.
This coating, which was originally introduced into the European market in 1999, has been applied to more than 300 million square feet of facade surfaces. This fact attests to the product's effectiveness and the high level of satisfaction among customers and applicators.
The Lotusan exterior coating is the first technical product to incorporate this phenomenon, which was christened the Lotus Effect® by botanist Dr. Wilhelm Barthlott. Exteriors treated with this coating remain dry and attractive longer - a particular advantage on those sides of buildings which are exposed to severe weather effects.
The new surface technology also reduces the risk of attack by micro-organisms. Algae and fungal spores are either washed off or are unable to survive on a dry and dirt-free exterior. This is also confirmed by a study from 2002, which found that after three years the level of germs on a surface coated with Lotusan was still 90 percent lower than that on another surface coated with a conventional paint product.
